A R C H I T E C T U R A L These images were commissioned by various practicing architects. They are all based on detailed drawings of a nature appropriate for a town planning application. Although an architect is of course mainly concerned with how a building looks, I believe it is how a building meets its surrounds that is just as important. I am therefore very particular about the direction of light, corresponding time of day and season, plant, people, vehicle activity and a perception of breeze. If I can connect people to these elements subconsciously, they're closer to being in the scene and addressing the building. Firstly I establish a realistic person's viewpoint by use of a simple 3D computer model to achieve correct perspective. This accounts for much of the 5 hours to work up a simple black and white sketch image (as shown). From here it is impractical to change the viewpoint as I work by hand. Spending a further 5 hours adding flat colour, texture & people to such a sketch (as shown), provides a good general impression of a space whilst avoiding any overly detailed confusion. Intermediate images of 20 hours can be seen under the heading Urban Planning. More complex images of around 30-40 hours (as shown) involve clip art of real materials and conveying more realistic lighting, vehicles, landscape, etc. High quality photos of a site can be an excellent background for either stylised or realistic images. It is also helpful to be supplied with photos of previously executed works and other inspirational images. |
